Biblical Accuracy
Matthew
Fontaine Maury (1806-1873) dedicated his life to finding out if there
really were “paths of the sea” as stated in Psalm 8:8. During a long
illness, Maury’s son read the Bible to him and Maury was drawn to this
verse. After recovering, he began to make the study of the oceans his
life’s passion. <<Selection in Document>>
Maury was the first to recognize that the seas
contained circulating systems with interaction between wind and water. He
spent decades collecting thousands of ships logs from captains and
compiling their weather/travel information into a systematic understanding
of the ocean’s circulating patterns.
His book on physical oceanography is still considered
the foundational textbook on this subject. In 1927, the United States
Naval Institute issued a book by C.L. Lewis titled Matthew Fontaine Maury:
Pathfinder of the Seas, which describes Maury’s work and inspiration.
Maury trusted God’s Word and as a result, developed the science of
oceanography.
